How ADUDesk works

Research the rules, understand what drives cost, then talk to professionals — in that order.

1. Start with your ZIP code

Almost everything about an ADU project — what is permitted, what it costs, who can build it — depends on where the property is. Entering a ZIP code tells us which city guide and which local information are relevant to you. Nothing about your property is evaluated at this point.

2. Read the local rules

California sets a statewide framework and each city adopts its own ADU ordinance within it. Our city guides orient you and tell you which questions to bring to your planning department, which is the authority for your address.

3. Build a budget you can defend

Unit type, site conditions, utility work, and local fees account for most of the difference between two ADU budgets. The cost tool collects those inputs so a range can be built on local pricing rather than a national average.

4. Talk to professionals

When you are ready, we can introduce you to local professionals who work on ADUs. ADUDesk does not screen, license, or verify them — checking licensing, insurance, and references before you sign anything is your responsibility.

What it costs to use ADUDesk

Reading articles, browsing city guides, and checking your ZIP code are free, and none of it obligates you to anything.
